John McCain
05/01/2007

Well, it is "official". US Senator John McCain has officially announced he is running for the Republican Presidential Nomination. Or in other words, John McCain wants to be President and is willing to say so "officially". But it is what Sen. McCain said that struck me. He said this week; "I may not be the youngest candidate...but I am the most experienced." (note: and the crowd cheered after he said this as if he said something profound or amazing...).

Sen. McCain is experienced at what? Lets recall Senator McCain's history:

*Vietnam War vetern who was a Prisoner of War (POW) of the Communists where he was tortured.

*When he was elected to be a Senator from Arizona, he assumed the Seante seat vacated by Barry Goldwater. Goldwater, you may remember, was the "ultra-conservative" in the 1964 Presidential Race whose race was destroyed by President Lyndon Johnson.

*McCain was a big supporter of Ronald Reagan during the 1980's which made him very popular among conservatives and Republicans.

*McCain did not run for President in 1996 because, according to "Washington Insiders" (We don't really know who they are, but everyone points to them as wonderful sources) McCain wanted to give Bob Dole his "rightful shot at being the next President of the US..."

*McCain ran for the nomination in 2000 in which his campaign fell apart after the "Bush campaign machine" put out information about McCain's voting record and "leaked" info about McCain's anger problems...

Now in 2007, McCain waited until April for the official announcement for the same reason he has done everything else he has done in his political life. He is positioning himself to "not lose". While I have a great deal of respect for Senator McCain for his service to his country and I believe he should be honored for his war record, I also know that his political career has been far from "noteworthy", unless you are someone who voted for John Kerry in 2004 only because you hate Bush, but your politics line up more so with Rudy Guiliani than Tom Tancredo or Duncan Hunter.

The facts are this: John McCain is a "bi-partisan hero" who has gone back and forth on several "key" issues. McCain has claimed he does not "flip flop" on any issues. Sure, Senator McCain has not blatently changed positions or opinions on issues in a way that is so obvious like Senator John Kerry ("I voted for the war before I voted against it") or former Senator Majority Leader Bill Frist (The man who one year was one of the most anti-embryonic stem cell research advocates, the next year is pushing for embryonic stem cell research legistlation). But McCain has changed his positions on three (3) issues:

1. In 2000, Senator McCain called Rev. Jerry Falwell (Liberty University) and Pat Robertson (700 Club), both famous leaders in the Christian community, "Agents of intolerence". But just this past year, McCain went out of his way to "make up" with Falwell and show himself a good Christian politician.

2. While in some interviews McCain has claimed to be "Adamantly Pro-Life", in other interviews he has discussed how his personal values cannot "interfer with a woman's right to choose".

3. The infamous McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance legislation did the exact opposite that Senator McCain promised. Those with deep pockets financially have more clout now than ever under the new laws put down by this new legislation. While McCain says this legislation was created to "stop Big Boss politics", but there are still political "King Pins" who are throwing money into political campaigns, they just have to be more "creative" about it.

John McCain continually says one thing to one person and says something else to another. he is continually trying to appeal to both conservatives and liberals. Senator McCain may be "experienced" alright, maybe experienced at playing both sides to gain favor. The same guy who goes onto sports and MTV-type shows and says "A**" and gets the word "S**t" bleeped out and tries to act like he is some "Mavarick" bad boy who is so "cool" and hip, then runs to Liberty University and southern states and talks about Judeo-Christian values and living the "values" of the Bible and not conforming to anyone's standards. John McCain is not a conservative or a "Reagan Republican" or a "Moderate Republican". He is a guy who sees where the winds of public opinion is blowing and runs in that direction.

Republicans call Bill Clinton "Slick Willie" for his ability to lie or conive his way out of trouble changing his persona to "fit the audience" . Though Clinton is a smooth talker and intellegently sly and affiable, McCain, on the other hand, is brash, and unapologetic. Senator McCain, like Bill Clinton is a political chameleon. Plain and simple. Do you want another political chameleon as the President of the United States?
